He was a sophomore at Boston College when World War II began and enlisted in the US Army Air Corp as an Aviation Cadet. LT McGonagle was assigned to the 319th Bomb Group 440th Squadron in Sardinia, Italy. In October 1944, his B-26 Martin Maurader and crew of six were shot down over Mantua, Italy. Although he was wounded and burned, he bailed out and was captured on the ground. After an initial hospitalization and local imprisonment, he was transported to Germany and interned at Stalag Luft I as a POW until liberated by the Russians at the end of the war. He received the Purple Heart, the Air Medal with clusters, and the POW Medal. Following his return from the war, he completed his final two years of study at Boston College. He worked in sales of building and cement products to the construction industry. In 1984, he retired as vice-president of sales and marketing for Marquette Cement. He was a volunteer at St Thomas Hospital during retirement, and was a member of the WWII Bomber group of Middle TN and the Hillwood Country Club. He served as past-President of the Nashville Seniors Golf Association.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, July 6, at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home. Mass of Resurrection was held on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Cathedral of Incarnation with Rev Peter Do Quang Chau celebrating. Interment was at Arlington Memorial Cemetery with full military honors on August 12 2011.
