CLARK WILLIAMS VETERAN OF WAR OF '61 IS DEAD

Two Comrades of Civil War are Left in Wellston to Carry on

Clark Williams, who marched with Sherman to the sea, and for more than four years fought in the Civil War, died Tuesday morning at the home of his son, Holly Williams, on the old Bundy farm in the northwest part of Wellston.

The death of the old veteran who had reached the age of 90 on December 5 last, leaves only two comrades of those stirring days in Washington. Dr. T. C. Rogers and James L. Johnson, both of whom are in fair health.

Mr. Williams had been failing in strength for some time and was unable to appear at the last Memorial Day celebration.
He is survived by four children, A Hollie Williams and Mrs. Geo Woodruff of Wellston, William Williams of Washington C. H., children of his first marriage, and by Floyd Williams of Chillicothe, a son by his second marriage. He also outlived a third wife, who bore no children. Altogether he was the father of eight sons and daughters.

Perry Williams of Hamden is a brother.

William Clarkson Williams was born at Salem Center, east of Wilkersville, but shortly after the war came to Jackson County and settled in Wellston about the time the town was founded.
He had a gallant war record. He enlisted in the 53rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the fall of 1861 at Jackson and in the following February the regiment reported to Gen. W. T. Sherman at Paducah, Ky.
Clark Williams fought in several famous battles, Shiloh, Corinth, the siege of Vicksburg, Black River, Jackson, Mission Ridge, Resaca, Dallas, Kenesaw Mountain, Ruc's Mills, Atlanta, Jonesboro, and then on Sherman's march to the sea.
