BEMENT – Carol Ann Bowen, 72, of Bement passed away at 3:13 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 20, 2011) at St. Joseph's Hospital, St. Charles, Mo.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Bement United Methodist Church, 249 N. Piatt St., Bement. Burial will be in Bement Township Cemetery, Bement. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Roux-Hinds Funeral Home, 348 N. Piatt St., Bement. Memorial contributions can be made to the Carol Bowen Scholarship of the Illinois Rural Letter Carriers Association or to the Bement Public Library.
Carol was born on Nov. 10, 1938, in Decatur, a daughter of Robert E. and Ellen M. Sablotny. She married Loren Ray Bowen on May 17, 1964, in Decatur, and he survives.
Carol was a graduate of Millikin University in Decatur. She worked as a home economist for Illinois Power in Belleville and as a home economics teacher in Macon. She was later a University of Illinois Extension adviser in Macon and Piatt counties. She also worked as editor of the Bement Record.
She was a public library trustee for many years and later became director at the Bement Public Library. She retired from the role last December after over 23 years of service.
Carol was also past secretary of the Bement Community Council.
She was very active in the Illinois Rural Carriers' Auxiliary. Carol was elected secretary of the National Rural Letter Carriers' Auxiliary in 1995 and served for five years, traveling throughout the country giving speeches promoting their philanthropic work. Carol was a member of the Bement United Methodist Church.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren and one of her greatest joys was accompanying her daughter on a 2 1/2 week trip to China to bring home her granddaughter, Kaitlyn.
Roux-Hinds Funeral Home, 348 N. Piatt St., Bement, has been entrusted with the family's loved one for Carol's services.
