Anne Eliza Lyons was born near Ballymoney, County Antrim, Northern Ireland -- possibly in a small townland named Drumaheglis. She and her husband James C. McLaughlin were married in 1840 in N. Ireland and came to America through New Orleans in 1845. They settled in Randolph County, Illinois first, then in 1848 came to Marion County. Anne had 10 children, but only 3 lived long enough to have children of their own -- Thomas J., Joseph K. and Anne Eliza Morton. As a widow, Anne later lived with her daughter Anne Eliza Morton, whose family moved away from Illinois, first to Gibson County, Indiana, then to Rice, Virginia--where she died in 1908. Anne Eliza Lyons McLaughlin was known for her strength and toughness, according to a writeup by Dorothy McLaughlin O'Donnell. "She could add a man's strength on the farm, even in old age, and she didn't believe in any more medicine than a pinch of salt. She also thought molasses and butter on your bread was too much, either one was enough." NOTE: Anne wasn't the only Lyons to make it over from Ireland. Her widowed mother Anne Knox Lyons came to Randolph County, Illinois, as did 3 or 4 of her brothers "for political reasons".
