Montgomery was a one of six children of Walker Gilmer Meriwether (1794–1841) and Jane Warner Lewis (1806–1871). He married his first cousin, Mary Christian Meriwether, on 4 Nov 1852 in Lincoln County, Missouri; he and Mary had two children, both of whom died in infancy. One headstone has been found which is the resting place an infant son.
Note: He also has a headstone at St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery that gives a birth date of 1832. But the age at death and other family records all support a birth year of 1831.
