1932-2011
Francis Lecompte Spalding, Jr. … 79, Economy, passed away on August 17, 2011.

Born February 29, 1932, in Washington, D.C. to his namesake, a diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service, and Loranda Prochnik, daughter of the Austrian ambassador to the U.S. He grew up mostly in Europe and graduated from Harvard University.

Fran entered the US military, trained at the Army Language School, and worked as a Russian translator in West Berlin during the early days of the Cold War.

He married Elizabeth (Betty) Sommers in 1957, studied forestry at Utah State University, then began a career teaching primarily Latin.

Desiring a rural life, Fran moved with his young family to Economy in 1971 and began subsistence farming. This life style suited Fran's passion for Nature, which he pursued most notably through bird watching and photography. His library of favourite books was a sustaining joy.

An active member of the Nova Scotia Bird Society, and compiler of the Economy Christmas Bird Count, he contributed significantly to knowledge of bird life in the area. He enriched community life with erudite and witty columns on local nature sightings in The Shoreline, and volunteer bookkeeping for the Glooscap Country Bazaar with Betty for many years.
Fran is survived by his wife Betty, Economy; sons Francis (Cindy), Damascus, Maryland, Edward (Huisheng), Windsor Junction, Nova Scotia, and Edgar (Kerry), Middleton, Wisconsin; twin brothers Edgar "Shelly", San José, Costa Rica, Peter (Carole), Washington, DC, half-brothers Charles (Patricia), San José, Costa Rica, and David, Dover, New Hampshire; two grandsons and a step-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by sister Stephanie (Mrs. Efrem) Zimbalist. A remembrance and celebration of life event is to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Nature Conservancy Canada.
