Mrs. Mary Cooper, 4225 S. E. Boise Street, has received the Purple Heart award fom the Marine Corps on the first anniversary of her son's death at Guadalcanal. He was Private First Class Victor I. Cooper, 19, of the First Marine Division. Cooper enlisted in Portland three days after Pearl Harbor. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for his part in the assaults at Tulagi, Gavutu, Tanambogo, Florida and Guadalcanal in the British Solomon Islands.
A Central Catholic High School student before entering the corps, Cooper had five brothers and four sisters.
