William "Bill" David Allgood, 80, of Tifton died Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 26, 2011, at New River Baptist Church. Rev. Jason Jones and Rev. Larry Layfield will officiate with burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Deacons of New River Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 25, 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Allgood was born on January 2, 1931 in Buford (Gwinnett County) and was the son of Walter David Allgood and Abbie Ruvie Wiggins Allgood, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by a sister, who raised him from the age of two, Grace Allgood Cantrell and her husband, Bonnie Cantrell; two brothers, Moss and Glynn Allgood; and his daughter, Krista "Kris" Mattocks, who died June 18, 2011. He attended R. E. Lee High School in Thomaston, joining the United States Army on December 27, 1950 and received his Associates Degree in 1956 from Gordon Military College. He was retired from Union Camp Corporation.

Mr. Allgood was a member of New River Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Senior Men's Sunday school class, the Salt Shakers Choir, the Brotherhood and Club 55. He was a member of the American Legion Post 21. He served as a Sergeant (T) from December 1950 through December 1953 during the Korean War, earning the Combat Medic's Badge. His awards also include the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. He enjoyed working in the yard, tending his flowers, building birdhouses and antiquing furniture, especially old trunks.

Mr. Allgood is survived by his wife of 51 years, Essielene York Allgood of Tifton; two sisters, Barbara McLemore of Knoxville, Tennessee and Beverly Corley of Thomaston; and his son-in-law, Charles "Chip" Mattocks, Jr. of Chula.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial gifts may be made to the New River Baptist Church Missions Fund, 17 Old Brookfield Road, Tifton, GA 31794.
