Gladys E. Gaugert

Gladys E. Gaugert, 74, of Watertown, was welcomed into heaven by God and her beloved husband, Earl, on Tuesday evening, Sept. 21, 2010, surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Terry Larson officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Watertown.

Relatives and friends may call to pay their respects at the Hafemeister Funeral Home in Watertown on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church, Rainbow Hospice or to the charity of one's choice.

The former Gladys Esther Zubke was born in the town of Shields on July 17, 1936, daughter of Emil Otto and Ruth Marie (Rohloff) Zubke. On Nov. 12, 1955, she married Earl L. Gaugert in Dubuque, Iowa. Earl preceded her in death on April 24, 2010.

Gladys was a housewife and had been employed at the former Coast to Coast Hardware Store, Brandt Automatic Cashier and Bee Industries, all in Watertown.

Gladys was confirmed and a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown. She was also a member of the Beaudoin-Koehler-Draeger Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3709 in Watertown, where she had managed the kitchen for several years; a member of the Plattdeutscher Verein in Watertown; and the Johnson Creek Riders.

Gladys was very devoted to her family and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gladys loved to sew and mend. At any given time, you would see her sewing machine on her table, ready for her to use. She loved making quilts for everyone in her family; for wedding gifts, welcoming a brand new baby to the family and several other special occasions. She also enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and special occasions, going to their home in Friendship, traveling, playing cards, bingo and gambling.

Gladys is survived by her six children, Thomas (Juli) Gaugert, Michael (Julie) Gaugert, Patricia (Jeffrey) Timm and Curtis Gaugert, all of Watertown, Jeffrey (fiancée, Sara) Gaugert of Janesville and stepson, David Gaugert of Indiana; 13 grandchildren, Billy Joe Gaugert, Bobbi Jo (Ben) Nielsen, Brett Thomas Gaugert, Kelly (Scott) Reitz, Kevin (Tina) Gaugert, Kimberly (Shane) Walker, Jessica Gaugert, Michael Gaugert, Christine (Mike) Acheson, Jay Hardt, Kiley Timm, Crystal Kratzer, Amber Mann; 10 great-grandchildren, Ryan Gaugert, Drue Gaugert, Taylor Gaugert, Makoa Gaugert, Dylan Reitz, Devin Reitz, Fiona Gaugert, Roman Gaugert, Hayden Acheson, Hailey Acheson; a brother, Ronald Zubke of Watertown; a sister-in-law, Barbara Zubke of Watertown; two brothers-in-law, Eugene Freson of Watertown and Harold (Odessa) Gaugert of Janesville; three sisters-in-law, Lois (John) Burggraf of Janesville, Doris (Earl) Thom of Johnson Creek and Barbara Gaugert of Johnson Creek; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Karl, Leroy, Dennis and Lawrence Zubke; a sister, Irma Freson; and a brother-in-law, Vernon Gaugert.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Rainbow Hospice and the nurses at the Watertown Regional Medical Center for the fine care they provided.
