Robert Tompkins Garnett, 91 of Fayetteville, AR passed away Sunday, February 8, 2009 in Fayetteville. He was born April 24, 1917 in Greybull, WY to Robert Christopher Tompkins Garnett and Edith (Higenbotham) Garnett.

He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force, a Chartered Life Underwriter and a Dale Carnegie instructor in Missouri and Mississippi.

He graduated high school in Greybull, WY, then received a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics in 1940 from Iowa State University followed by a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Guidance in 1969 from the University of Memphis. After graduation from Iowa State University he was first employed by Cargill, Inc. in Minneapolis in 1940. He moved to Memphis, TN in 1951 where he was the founder of the 500 acre Pinecrest Presbyterian Retreat and Conference Center. While in Memphis he was the co-developer of an adult continuing education program, Milady Meet The Professor at the Memphis State University, which was presented in 30 communities in the Memphis Area.

After retirement he moved to Fayetteville, AR where he resided at Butterfield Trail Village Retirement Community. In Fayetteville he was a member of the founding board of directors of the 12 church Cooperative Emergency Outreach in 1990, which organization he named and served as a volunteer. He also volunteered countless hours in delivering meals to homebound seniors out of the Sang Center. He was an elder in the First United Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville and through the Presbytery of Arkansas he became a commissioned lay pastor. He served as lay pastor to the Cane Hill Presbyterian Church for many years.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gwynne Garnett.

He is survived by his wife, Louise (Nuckolls) Garnett, two sons; Bruce Timothy Garnett of Hot Springs, AR, Robert Eugene Garnett,. of Fort Myers, FL, one brother; Cyrus Garnett of Bellevue, WA, four grandchildren; Robert Eugene Garnett, Jr. of Memphis, TN, Eben Garnett of San Francisco, CA, Jessica Garnett of Hot Springs, AR, Matthew Garnett of Fayetteville, AR, and one great granddaughter; Maisy Garnett of San Francisco, CA.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 21, 2009 at First United Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville with Reverends Barry Williams and Lee Power officiating.
