Joe A. Upchurch passed away
peacefully at his home in
Fayetteville on Sept. 14,
2007. He was born Aug. 25,
1924, in Bonanza, and was
the son of Earle F. and
Nellie Barr Upchurch. The
family later moved to Fort
Smith, where he attended
the Fort Smith public schools.
He graduated from the
University of Arkansas,
where he was a member of
Sigma Nu fraternity. Joe
was a Navy veteran of World
War II. He was the founder
and former owner of Upchurch
Electrical Supply Co., and
was a former treasurer and
elder of First United
Presbyterian Church in
Fayetteville. He was a
supporter of numerous civic,
educational and charitable
projects and organizations.
Joe was a man of integrity.
He will be remembered as an
ethical and honest person in
all his business dealings. It
was important to him that his
customers received a fair deal.
He helped those less fortunate
than himself and was committed
to excellence in all that he
did. He also relished a good
joke and in his younger years,
plotted the execution of
numerous practical jokes upon
others. The Buffalo River was
near and dear to Joe's heart,
and he spent many happy hours
on float trips and introducing
its beauty to others.
His wife, Florence Stice
Upchurch, and his sister
Martha Louise Meredith,
preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughter
Fenner Russell and husband
David of Fayetteville and
their children Charlie of
Austin, Texas, Jimbo of
Ventura, Calif., and Katie
of Fayetteville; son Andy
of San Leon, Texas; daughter
Melissa Burnett of Garland,
Texas; daughter Nancy Fletcher
and husband Alan and their
children Benjamin and Allison,
of Fort Worth, Texas. Joe is
also survived by his sister,
Earlene Little, of Scarsdale,
N.Y., a host of nieces and
nephews, and he leaves behind
a special friend, Maxine Ward.
A memorial service in celebration
of Joe's life will be held at
the First United Presbyterian
Church in Fayetteville at
2 p.m. Friday, September 21,
2007, under the direction of
Moore's Chapel. Friends are
invited to join the family
following the service for
casual visiting and sharing
of fond memories at the
Russells' home, 124 W.
Prospect. The family requests
that memorials be made to
Washington Regional Hospice,
34 Colt Square, Fayetteville,
AR 72703 or the Fayetteville
Public Education Foundation,
