Private, Co. E, 3rd Massachusetts Infantry
Private, Co. E, 29th Massachusetts Infantry

A 31-year-old Plymouth, MA leather cutter, Winslow enlisted for three years service on May 18, 1861 and was mustered four days later as a Private in Co. E of the 3rd Massachusetts Infantry. On July 16th, when men in the 3rd and 4th Massachusetts whose three-month enlistments had expired departed for home, those with three-year enlistments were redesignated as the 29th Massachusetts and effectively formed a Battalion.

With his regiment on duty at Newport News, VA, Winslow was detailed as a Cook for the post hospital on Nov. 1, 1861 and continued in this role until Nov. 1, 1862 when he was discharged for disability caused by Chronic Diarrhea. His military service record contains no comment regarding his culinary abilities.

As Winslow was a member of the Collingwood G.A.R. Post 76 in Plymouth his comrades would have performed graveside rituals at Burial Hill in October 1899.
