Nellie was born to Eleizer and Sarah Griffin in Liter, Illinois, the 9th of 10 children. Her father died when she was 8 years old in Liter, Illinois. At the age of 13 her left leg was broken when a deadly cyclone destroyed the town along with the family dry goods store and home. Five family members died from their injuries.
The family moved to Nokomis, Illinois where she lived with her mother and brother, Jesse. In 1900 she was a bookkeeper probably for Jesse in his hardware business.
About 1902 Nellie married John Newton Strain who was a Gospel Preacher. In 1910 her family was living in Union Township, Union County, Iowa. She died four years later, at the age of 45, in Afton, Union County, Iowa.
Nellie and John had two daughters: Genevieve and Dorothy.
