Mrs Anna Matheny Cornell, age 91, widow of Capt William Cornell, Civil War officer, died this morning at the family home, 205 E States St. Her husband died 25 years ago, nine years after the family came to Athens to live. Mrs Cornell, daughter of the late Isaac and Christiana Harper Matheny, was born at Beaumont in 1847 and on Nov 11, 1866, married Captain Cornell, who was also a native of The Plains district. They were the parents of nine children, five of whom survive. The family home was on a farm near Chauncey for many years.

Surviving children are: Mrs Cora Lockridge, Brownsville, Pa,; Mrs J A Pratt, Parkersburg, W Va; Mrs William Shields, Athens; Ray Cornell, Columbus, and Merritt F Cornell, Youngstown. The children who preceded their mother in death were: Angie B Mills, Los Angeles; Guy Cornell, Akron; Ella, who died in childhood, and William D, who died in Army service during the World War. Fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, also survive. A brother, Leroy S Matheny, lives in Nelsonville.

A member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since girlhood, Mrs Cornell was a Gold Star Mother, a member of the WRC and of the Eastern Star. Funeral services will be held at the First M E Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in charge of Rev W G Seaman. Interment will be made in the West Union Street Cemetery. Friends may call until the hour of the service.
