Born in Springfield, TN to Isaac & Martha Martin. Both parents died in 1901 when Ethel was only 10 years old. She, along with at least two of her living siblings, moved to Pleasant Plains, IL to live with family. There she eventually met and married Otto L. Kundig and together they ran the Kundig General Merchandise store. She was an active member of the Peter Cartright Methodist Church and was known for always having a yard full of beautiful flowers. Together they had three sons: Henry Martin Kundig, LaRue "Babe" Kundig, and Joe Lee Kundig.
