John Christopher Lake was one of nine children of the Honorable Simon Lake (who had served in the New Jersey General Assembly for Atlantic County) and his first wife, Sarah Blake. His siblings were: Ezra; Mary; Abigail; Anna; Frances; the Rev. Simon Wesley Lake; James; and Sarah. He operated an iron foundry in Ocean City, New Jersey where his son Simon tinkered away, perhaps laying the groundwork for his future inventions. His son Simon Lake (1866-1945) eventually became a well-known inventor and was dubbed "the Father of the Modern Submarine".
