James R. "Jim" Thiele, 84, Boscobel, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at Boscobel Area Health Care.

Jim was born on Oct. 10, 1923, in Janesville, the son of Albert and Anna (Ibinger) Thiele.

Jim graduated from Black River Falls High School in 1941, and then joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. During World War II , he was stationed on Saipan, where he serve with the 879th Bomb Squadron, 499th Bomb Group, and 73rd Bomb Wing as a gunner on a B-29. He completed 33 combat missions, including two over Tokyo, as well as one air-sea search mission. Jim was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Pacific Theater Medal with Three Battle Stars.

After the war, Jim went to Boscobel where he assumed his job as manager of the Blaine Theater. Jim operated the theater for over 60 ears, purchasing the business in 1957. Jim met the love of his life, Grace Churchill, in October of 1946, and they were married on July 31, 1947 in Black River Falls.

He was an active member of the Boscobel community, serving on the Rescue Squad for 21 years, as well as serving as President and Secretary, and a member of the Unique Coffee Club. Jim organized and ran the Santa Claus Day for 54 years.

Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Grace; three sons, Steven (Judy), Madison, Patrick (Jane), Minneapolis, Minn. and Bermuda, and Michael, Boscobel; three grandchildren, Joanna (Tony) Curry, Minneapolis, Minn., Melissa (Eric) Sonnenberg, Green Bay, and Justin Thiele, Chicago, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Tate, Grace, Nora; and two sisters, Lucille Resch, Menasha and JoAnne Loomis, Minneapolis, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Harold; his brother, Earl; and sister, Norma Schweiger.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 19 at the Beeman-Patchak Funeral Home in Boscobel with Pastor Stan Pegram officiating. There was a visitation preceding services.

Military honors were accorded by the Blake-Semrad American Legion Post #134 and the Gilbertson-Pitzer VFW Post #10393.

A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Boscobel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Boscobel Rescue Squad.
