Charles Rice Ashton was a son of Charles Edwin Ashton and Emma Rosella (Rice) Ashton, born while the growing family was living in Colorado on Aug 15th, 1896. They moved to Oregon in 1910 and remained there, having found land on Knox Butte to live on and farm where the children reached adulthood. Charles fought in World War 1, the only son in the family to do so. Upon returning home from the war, he married Edith Burns (1897-1980) and became a City Recorder & Police Judge for the City of Albany, Oregon. Tragically, his appendix burst and peritonitis set in causing gangrene of his femoral artery, right thigh and leg when he was only 51 years of age, and, after spending 28 agonizing hours at Albany General Hospital, he died on Sept 14th, 1947. His bereaved wife was a widow at the age of 50 years. She buried her husband at Willamette Memorial Park at Albany, Linn County, Oregon. She eventually apparently did remarry at some point as, when she died in 1980, her last name was Heffley, but she was buried near her 1st husband, Charles Rice Ashton, at Willamette Memorial Park at Albany, Linn County, Oregon.
