Miss Elizabeth Knapp Ely, for many years a resident of this city and a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families of Watertown, died late Monday afternoon at the family residence 250 Clinton Street, following a brief illness.
Miss Ely was born in Brownville, Feb 5, 1832, a daughter of William Stow Ely and Lydia Skinner Ely. Miss Ely was the youngest and the only surviving daughter. She resided during the early years of her life in the village of Brownville and moved to this city many years ago. She was well known throughout this section where her circle of acquaintances was large.
Miss Ely's brother was the founder of the city's first savings bank, while all of the members of the family were prominent in the growth of the city.
Miss Ely is survived by four nieces, Miss Mary Whitney Ely, Miss Martha B. Ely, and Mrs. William Graham Johnston, this city, and Mrs. S. Hazard Halsted of Pasadena California; and one grand-nephew, Dr. George Whitney Outerbridge of Philadelphia, Pa.
