Husband to Elizabeth (Stevenson). They had 14 children together, although at least 4 of them died in childhood. He was a cabinetmaker and inventor by trade, and held at least two invention patents.

He was killed when he walked in front of a cable car at about 8:30 p.m., August 13, 1881. He was run over and killed. He had not heard the car due to deafness. He was the only person in Pennsylvania killed by cable car accident that year.
