Arthur Herman Post was the 4th of 6 children born to Alson Hoyt Post & Mercy Morenda McEuen/McEwen. He married on 01 Dec 1857 at Hinesburg to Rachel Ann "Anna" Waite, whose Baptist minister father Archibald performed the nuptials. Herman and Anna had 3 children, all born at Hinesburg.

Sometime in his late teens or early 20s, Arthur Herman reversed his names to Herman Arthur so that his initials would differ from those of his father. He worked as a farmer and served in Company G, 14th Vermont Volunteers during the Civil War.

Herman had epilepsy which was a contributing factor to his death in 1901.
