Elbert was the eldest of 3 children born to Herman Arthur Post and Rachel Ann Waite. He grew up in Hinesburg and married there on 27 Mar 1888 to Hattie Gladys Mead. In 1890, they resided at Galesburg, Illinois where their eldest child Helen was born; in 1892 they resided at University Place, Nebraska where their second child Arthur was born; and in 1894 they returned to Vermont where their last two children were born. Elbert worked as a hardware, stove & furnace dealer in Nebraska, and as a sales agent for Swift's Lowell Fertilizer Co. in Essex Junction VT.

Elbert's funeral notice from an unknown newspaper clipping (possibly the Essex Reporter):
"Funeral services for Elbert W. Post, who died Monday morning, were held at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon at the Congregational Church. The Rev. Duncan Livingstone conducted a short prayer service at the house preceding the church service. E. W. Crannell of Burlington read the Masonic service. The bearers were Dr. David Marvin, L. H. Leach, H. O. Whitney, Hardy A. Merrill, F. H. McGinnis and A. J. Crandall. Burial was made in Hinesburg."
