He was a mountain climber. he climbed throughout north america. he made many ascents in the teton mountains in wyoming. He climbed Mt. mckinley by the west buttress and again by the western rim of the south face. he was a member of the 1963 american mount everest expedition. On March 23, 1963 while maping a route from base camp through the Khumbu ice fall he was killed when two blocks of ice about the size of boxcars fell on him. four other climbers with him were spared. his body is under tons of ice in the Khumbu ice fall on mount everest

Jake Breitenbach was killed on March 23 by the collapse of an ice wall. His body was recovered by a Japanese expedition in 1969. Five others on the expedition also reached the summit.
