Grace Bowling Thomas, 98, formerly of Vesta, died Monday, May 15, 2000, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, where she was a resident.

She was born in Patrick County on February 20, 1902, a daughter of the late Abe and Susan Terry Bowling. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Homer Elzia Clifton; her second husband, James Samuel "Jim" Thomas; a stepson, Troy Lee Thomas; six sisters, Virginia Duld, Ethel Lee, Fannie Cruise, Kelly Lovett, Ocie Harrell and Gladys Overby; and three brothers, Lester Bowling, Thomas Bowling and Will Bowling.

She was of the Primitive Baptist faith.

Surviving are one daughter, Phyllis Thomas of Vesta, and fiance, Lloyd T. Stovall; two sons, Guy S. Clifton of Roanoke and friend, Ola Shortt, and Richard and wife Margaret Clifton of Vesta; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Claude (Thelma) Wood of Danville; seven grandchildren, Jimmy Phillips, Richard Clifton Jr., Allen Dwayne Clifton, Deborah King, Tammy Rector, James Wood and Jean Marie Fowlkes; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart by the Rev. Kevin Combs. Burial will be in Meadows of Dan Baptist Church cemetery.
