Robert Lee Smith was the son of George Peter Smith and Martha Irene Bailey. He first married Nancy Ann Meadows and they had three children: Bertha; Ella Mae; and John Richard. After the death of his first wife, he married Fannie J. Belcher, daughter of Josephus C. Belcher and Mary Etta Buice. To this marriage, the following six children were born: Marian Etta; Millard Clyde; Cloyd A.; Ray G.; Luther Allen; and Dennis Marshall.
