DONALD E. FRYE SR.
Donald E. Frye Sr., 76, Pierre, S.D., died Thursday, March 21, 1996, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, with military honors.
Frye was born Feb. 2, 1920, in Fort Scott, the son of Edgar Everett and Virginia Kaufman Frye. He grew up and attended school in Fort Scott and graduated from Fort Scott High School. He attended Fort Scott Junior College (Fort Scott Community College) and Kansas State College (Pittsburg State University).
On March 17, 1942, he married Mabel C. Smith in Douglas County, Nev. She died in August 1990. Frye was attached to the Royal Air Force and flew Spitfires. He also flew P-51s and P-47 Thunderbolts in the European Theater in World War II. He received numerous medals and citations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. He retired after 22 years in the Air Force. He then worked for the General Services Administration from 1969 to 1976. He was a member of the VFW, DAV and American Legion. His pastimes were goose hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his mother, Virginia H. Frye, Wichita; three sons, Gary L. Frye, Kansas City, Mo., Donald E. Frye Jr., Pierre, and James P. Frye, Vermillion; one daughter, Doris Y. Mercer, Valdosta, Ga.; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Darcy, Gary Jr., Chad, Elisha and Justin; and one great-grandchild.
He also was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Eldon.
