The following taken from Drexel: The First Hundred Years 1890-1900, pg. 181: Jacob was the oldest of the GROVES brothers who came to Bates, Missouri, in 1868. He was born in Jefferson County, Virginia, the son of Joseph and Catherine STALEY GROVES. He was twenty years old when his family settled near Springfield, Illinois. He married Sarah A. RILEY born September 8, 1819, in Ohio. The marriage took place on the same day that Sarah's brother William Henry Riley married, Jacob's sister, Sarah Ann Groves. The marriages took place April 14, 1838, in Schuyler County, Illinois. They came to Missouri where they lived in the Woodland community the remainder of their lives, improving the farm where they lived. Jacob and Sarah had nine children: Stephen Jasper, Thomas, Joseph, Martha E., James William, John Newton, Emily, Nathan J., and Artemla.

Please note that the link to Jacob's father, Joseph Groves, is simply a marker on his second wife's tombstone. Joseph is actually buried in Brown County, IL, along with his first wife Catherine Staley Groves, and infant son of second wife, Henry Groves.
