Richard Rutledge enjoyed carpentry

by Terri Anne Greig - NWI Times - January 25, 1997

VALPARAISO - Richard E. Rutledge's career as a carpenter was more than just a job, it was his life.

Bettie Rutledge, his wife of 40 years, said he was happiest when he was making improvements to their Valparaiso home.

"He liked working around the house," she said. Mrs. Rutledge said her husband also liked staying close to home. She reminisced that when Mr. Rutledge began a project, he enjoyed working at it until it was completed. He put up aluminum siding on their home and garage and also installed new ceiling tiles throughout the inside of their house.

Mr. Rutledge, 68, a longtime resident of Valparaiso, passed away Jan. 19 at Porter Memorial Hospital. A native of Rankin, Ill., Mr. Rutledge was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked as a carpenter, retiring about 20 years ago, and was a member of Carpenters Local 1485. He also was a member of American Legion Post 94 in Valparaiso.

"He was just a very nice person," Mrs. Rutledge said. "He was very pleasant to be around."

Mr. Rutledge is survived by his wife, Bettie J. Bradney (Bryarly) Rutledge of Valparaiso; two sisters, Dorothy Rolan of Boswell, Ind., and Jean Deardurff of Kouts; one niece, Becky Bradney of Union Mills; and three nephews, Richard Lynn Rolan of Boswell, Rick Cochran of Milwaukee and Tom Cochran of Bethlehem, Pa.

Services were held Jan. 23 at Bartholomew Funeral Home in Valparaiso with the Rev. Chris Atkins officiating. Interment took place at Graceland Cemetery.
