SOLDIER OF THE REVOLUTION

Jacobus or James was the son of Guiliaem Bertholf and Rachel Bertholf who was the daughter of Hendrick Guiliaem Bertholf and Marritje Terhune. Their fathers Quirinus and Hendrick were brothers thus they were first cousins. I have not found the record yet but it is said that James married Metje (Martha) Christyntje Post. She was the daughter of Jacobus Post and Metje Gerritse Van Wagenen-

Jacobus was a Captain in the Revolution doing service at Elizabethport, New Jersey and vicinity experiencing much suffering for the Patriot cause, Their grandson James Suffern at the age of 16 came to live with them and in the course of time assumed his grandfather's business affairs. When Jacobus passed away, James was executor and inherited much of the estate himself. He became a successful and active man in society in politics and business.
