Through her mother, Maybelle is a daughter of a pioneer Spanish family who came to California in 1700's. Daughter of Reuben William Smith and Helena Felicia deLarios. Maybelle's grandmother Mrs. Christina Jacoba Larios was the oldest native daughter in California. Maybelle married Harry Rex Mickel in 1918. Harry retired as Chief Warrant Officer, U.S. Army and is buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California. Maybelle ashes were scattered at sea off Monterey, California.
