CONOVER — John Audren Agee Jr. of Conover, passed away Friday, Aug. 26 at the W.G. Bill Hefner Veteran's Hospital in Salisbury after a extended period of declining health.

John was born March 13, 1932, in Jacksboro, Tenn., to the late John Agee Sr. and Helen Lucille Bowman. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Ann Turner.

He was a retired U. S. Army lieutenant colonel, served in Korea, Germany and Vietnam veteran. He was in the eighth Army nuclear weapons division. He earned many metals and accommodations including Meritorious awards, Bronze Star and Purple Heart for combat in Vietnam. As a second career, John was employed by Theikol at Kennedy Space Center as a Senior Engineer on the Space Shuttle Columbia Program.

John was a graduate of Tennessee Tech as a mechanical engineer. He was a member of May's Chapel United Methodist Church in Maiden, N.C.

Surviving is his wife, Evelyn Lookadoo Agee; one daughter, Julie Agee Johnson and husband, Ray, of Orlando, Fla.; three sons, John A. Agee III and wife, Kathleen, of Melbourne, Fla., Michael Eugene Huffman of Newton, and Bruce Huffman and his wife, Sharon, of Galax, Va.; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild; a sister, Nola Stanley of Raleigh, N.C., special friends Conley and Cilla M. Fox of Conover.

A celebration of his life will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dave Kelly officiating. Military rites will be conducted by The American legion Post No. 48.

The family will receive friends following the service at Hickory Funeral Home.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1, at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 5901 Lyons View Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919-7521.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimers Association, 31 College Place, No. D320, Asheville, NC 28801-2644.
