Stanley Fletcher Ables, age 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1950, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, September 6, 2002, surrounded by his family.
Stanley is the beloved husband of and survived by Anna, daughters, Coral Lee Gibson and her husband, Thurman of Beeville, TX, Jessica Janeen Howard and her husband, Roy of Vanderwagen, NM, Stanlie Gail Andrews and her husband, Mike, Joyce Ladd, Anna M. Smetana, all of Albuquerque, son, Troy E. Ables and his wife, Jayne of Tijeras, sister, DeLaures Peppler of Columbia City, IN, 24 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Stanley was preceded in death by his first wife, Jessie Content Foutz Ables.
Stanley was a member of the North Valley Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Stanley was a member of the Zia Daylight Lodge #77 AF & AM and Albuquerque Scottish Rite Club. Stanley served in different positions in both his church and lodge.
Stanley was an avid golfer and was involved in the Optimist Club, United States Golf Association, Toastmasters Club International and Telephone Pioneers of America. Stanley worked for AT&T Long Line Division traveling and working in 38 states and Canada prior to 1950. Stanley transferred to Mountain Bell as a plant engineer and finally retired as a Right-of-Way agent in 1978.
Stanley earned his pilot's license in 1947. Stanley was in the Civilian Conservation Corp. in the early 1930s.
Stanley started his work career with the telephone company that spanned 41 years, starting on September 5, 1937 and ending with retirement on March 4, 1978. Stanley continued working on a contract basis for another 3 years.
In his spare time, he started and maintained Ables Repair Service for many years. Stanley always found time though for golfing. Stanley started as a caddy as soon as he was able to hold a golf bag. Stanley even got a hole-in-one at one point in his golfing days.

Stanley moved way out west to Arizona in the 1930s because he disliked the weather back east. During World War II he was a heavy equipment operator, building airfields and laying essential trans-continental cable in Canada. Coming out of the great depression he worked in the CCC Camps. Stanley had a phenomenal memory for the places he traveled, old friends and addresses. After retirement, he worked with the Shriners ferrying children back and forth to the airport, train station, hotels or doctor's offices to obtain treatment. Stanley and his wife traveled extensively after retirement to visit relatives and fish all over the United States.
Friends may visit the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, North Valley Ward, 1100 North Montaño Rd. NW, Albuquerque, NM with Bishop Scot Thurgood officiating. Interment will follow at Sandia Memory Gardens, Albuquerque, NM. Pallbearers will be Larry Hick, Zane Howard, Michael Andrews, Charles Andrews and Robert Andrews. Honorary pallbearers will be Troy Ables, Richard R. Andrews, Thurman Floyd Gibson Jr., John Smetana, Ernest Spicer II, Frank Ladd Jr. and James McDouglad.
