Velma Dessie Crawford, 85, passed away Saturday, May 1, 1999 after a short illness. She was born October 30, 1913, in Wauneta, Nebraska to Walter and Laura Wheeler. She graduated from Wauneta High School in 1931. Velma taught school for ten years in Nebraska and as a substitute teacher in Corpus Christi, Texas. On April 5, 1946, she married Vernon Essary Crawford in Wauneta, Nebraska. They lived in Corpus Christi for over fifty years. Velma retired to be near her family in Imperial, Nebraska in 1997. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, knitting, and painting.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon in 1988; infant daughter, JoAnn; two brothers, Keith and Francis; and sister Opal Ripper.
Mrs. Crawford is survived by two sons, Robert (Ellen Kathleen) Crawford of New Kinsington, PA and Vernon Crawford of Princeville, Hawaii; one daughter Charmaine Murphrey Lane of Newport Beach, CA; five grandchildren, Christopher Robert (Angel Lyn), of New Kinsington, PA, Thomas James Murphrey of Las Vegas, NV, John Edward Murphrey (Pamela Sue) of Corpus Christi, TX, Timothy Wayne Murphrey (Andrea) of Sacramento, CA, and Helen Marie Murphrey of San Diego, CA; nine great-grandchildren, Melissa Joy, Michael John, and Paige of Corpus Christi, TX, Jessica and Morgan of Sacramento, CA, Matthew Salois of San Diego, CA, Monique Renee (David) and Heather Dawn of CO, and Gabrielle Louise of Las Vegas; four great-great-grandchildren, Kristen Jean of New Kinsington, PA, Summer, Joe and Jessica of CO; three sisters; four brothers; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 5, 1999 in Imperial, NE. Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, May 7, 1999 at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors Everhart Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday May 8, 1999 at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
