Janeath A. ‘A.J.' Gaines, 85, of Stephenville passed away on Friday, February 8, 2013 following a long illness called frontotemporal degeneration disease.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Monday at Graham Street Church of Christ with Don Parker and Alan Nix officiating. Burial will follow at West End Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Sunday at Stephenville Funeral Home.

A.J. was born on September 19, 1927 in Lipan to Dwight W. and Christeen Byrd Gaines. He graduated from Stephenville High School in 1945 and shortly thereafter was drafted by the U. S. Army, serving with the occupation forces in Japan. He graduated from John Tarleton Agricultural College, and then began 37 ½ years of service with the Texas Department of Human Services. He graduated from Tarleton State University in 1968. He married Jean McLarty, June 16, 1950 in Stephenville in a triple wedding ceremony with her twin sister, Dean and Tom Collins, and her sister, Betty and Gene Menefee. During the course of his job they resided in Bay City, Eastland, Stephenville, and Fort Worth. They have lived in Stephenville continuously since 1977.

A. J. was a member of the Jaycees, and served as Boy Scout Master for the Jaycee sponsored troop. He was a long time member of the Graham Street Church of Christ, where he served the congregation as a deacon, Bible class teacher, and then as an elder until his health no longer permitted him to serve.

Survivors are his wife of 62 years, Jean; his daughters, Jan and husband Alan Nix of Stephenville, Jill and husband Martin Delabano of Dallas; granddaughters, Traci and Sam James of Fort Worth, Amy and Bart Garner of Stephenville; great grandchildren, Skylar and Cash Garner and Britton James; a great granddaughter expected in May. Also surviving are a brother, Kenneth Gaines of Stephenville; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Sam Eads of Demorest, Georgia; sisters-in-law, Betty Menefee of Granbury, and Joy and husband Sam Taylor of Stephenville; brother-in-law, Sammy and Karan McLarty of Waco; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents and parents-in-law, he was also preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Bobby McLarty, Tom Collins, and Gene Menefee; sister-in-law, Dean Collins; nephew, Tommy Collins and nieces, Connie Harvey and Amanda Hatcher.
