Gertrude Arthelia Swinney, age 95, passed away September 15, 2009. She was born in Mesa, Arizona to Walter Melson Tway and Sarah Hazel Tway on September 26, 1913. Gertrude Tway married LeRoy Zern Swinney on May 5, 1934 in Coquille. In 1999, she moved to Tempe, AZ and resided at Friendship Village until her death. Gertrude was devoted to her family and communityand was an avid gardner, especially known for her beautiful flowers.

She was active in Girl Scouts and P.E.O. and was a member of the first Christian Church in Coquille. Gertrude started working at the Post office in 1953 and was Postmaster in Coquille from 1971 to 1977. Gertrude is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Ruth Swinney of Leonia, NJ; daughter and son-in-law Janet and Robert Loud of Sun Lakes, AZ; Mary Beam of Shawnee Mission, KS; grandchildren, Karen Burns of Tulsa, OK, Marcia Swinney-Shay of Ankeny, IA, Robert Loud, Jr. of Shawnee Mission, KS, Michelle Laemmli of Lees Summit, MO, and Christina Powell of Gilbert, AZ; and eight great-grandchildren.

A family celebration of her life and graveside service will be held in Coquille, Oregon. The family suggests memorial contributions to the P.E.O. Foundation, designated to PCE, P.E.O. Foundation, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312.
