Age 88 yrs 2 mo 4 days. He was the 3rd of 11 children born to his parents. Left school at age 11 and went to work plowing. In 1842 he learned the trade of blacksmith. Left NY on 3/3/1849 on the bark "Norumbega" for Galveston, then traveling over land to San Diego. The company consisted of 36 men among them Dr. William Jones and George Griffith but the overland trip caused one of them to become too ill to travel on, and the other 2 remained with him in El Paso while the rest of the company moved on. After 2 months they attached themselves to a company of soldiers and continued their march under their protection. The 3 reached San Diego in Nov 1849 and after a couple of weeks they took passage by steamer to SF reaching there on 1/1/1850 and left shortly thereafter for the gold fields. The Union Water Co. was started in 1852 to bring water to Murphys and beyond. Dr. Jones and George Griffith were both part of that water co. Dr. Jones practiced in Murphys and Griffith also had his home there.
