h/o 1st Harriott Godwin Borland, 2nd Mrs Elmira (Murray) Murrelle.

Birth: 12th of twelve known children of father, 5th of mother's five, in Somerton, Nansemond county, Virginia.

The village of Somerton began in the 17th century when Sir Thomas Jernigan (also spelled Jarnigan) of Somerleyton, Suffolk county, England came to Virginia and was granted 250 acres in what now is Suffolk.

Last child of Washington Smith and Mary Powell, who, seven years before his birth, on Friday, 25 February 1825 were host to the Marquis De La'Fayette at their Somerton, Virginia Inn, feeding him fine food and drink, during the Marquises 24 state congressional invitation to tour, and where Tom's wife's grandfather's group met the Marquis to escort him on the muddy road to Murfreesboro, Hertford county, North Carolina for the night's gala affair at the Indian Queen Inn where he slept. NOTE Somerton Inn remains today within Somerton Historic District, as one of its oldest structures.

This pre-1800 ordinary, now addressed 8442 Arthur Drive, is where he spent his earliest years, exhibits many unique architectural details, including a double chimney with double shoulders and a pent roof with a window, reminiscent of Georgian style, a lunette window in the attic, and a three-part window on the second story facing Arthur Drive. The interior of the house is a side-hall plan and features detailing reminiscent of the Federal era. The mantles throughout the first floor feature elaborate detailing for such a rural dwelling. Throughout history, the dwelling served as both an ordinary and as a residence. It began as the "Thomas Smith Ordinary" and was later named the "Washington Smith Ordinary".

His father died in 1835, when he was around three years old.

Census: 1850, age 18 Nansemond county in household of older brother, merchant Benjamin Devania Smith, as a merchants' clerk.

Census: 1860, age 28 Suffolk, Nansemond county in household of merchant Owen R Flynn, a clerk.

He served as a 2nd Lt, Company A, 16th Virginia Infantry of General Mahone's Brigade during civil war, wounded several times, was at Appomattox during surrender. He refused promotions because he wanted to be 'one of the guys'. He is also the namesake for the Tom Smith Camp of the UCV & the SCV Camps in Suffolk, Virginia.

Following the war he became an astute business man in general merchandising, President of Farmer's Bank then of Suffolk National Bank, President of Suffolk Cotton Mills, and Commander of the Tom Smith Camp of Confederate Veterans while living in Suffolk, Virginia.
