When the 1870 U.S. census was taken for Walker Co., Georgia, 'Straton' Powell was a four year old boy. He was the youngest of two sons listed in the household of, Mary A. Powell, a thirty three year old widow. Mary A. Powell was shown as living next enumeration to her twenty seven year old brother, James A. Hendon, a single man on this record. At some point in time before 1876, Both Mary Ann Powell and her brother, James A. Hendon, moved to Logan Co., Arkansas. When the 1880 U.S. census for Logan Co., Arkansas was taken, Mary Ann Powell and her two sons were living in the James Hendon household. When this census was taken, William Stratton Powell was listed as age fifteen. He died at age twenty one.
