FACULTY, STUDENTS LIKED TEACHER LAURA MEYER

Laura Meyer was a teacher's teacher at Montezuma Elementary, according to her peers. Faculty and students alike came to Meyer for advice and assistance and the popular first-grade teacher helped them, her friends say. Meyer worked in the Albuquerque Public Schools for 24 years, fighting cancer for the past 15 months. She died Thursday. Meyer was 58. Kari Daniels, a second grade teacher at Montezuma, said Friday that Meyer was special because "she was always growing and learning. Some teachers teach the same year 24 times, but she made every year unique and special." Meyer was famous in the school for incubating chickens every year. She was also known for having a "great impact" on each of her students, said school nurse Jan Hawkins, a friend for 14 years. "Anybody who lived in the community and knew her wanted her to teach their first grade kids," Hawkins said. School counselor Susie Cheney said Meyer "had that gift for teaching. Every child did well and progressed. "She was a wonderful person, so wonderful with kids, families and parents." Meyer's husband, Ralph, said she went through 15 chemotherapy treatments, and each time after a three-day layoff, she returned to school. He said his wife was fortunate to have Judy Stocum as her substitute teacher throughout the last school year. Laura Meyer had planned to work at the school this fall as a special reading teacher, but had a stroke about a month ago. Her husband took time off from his assistant principal's job at St. Pius High School to be with her. "She was a real dedicated teacher, real enthusiastic," he said. "She loved her first graders." Survivors include daughter Lisa Meyer-Jacks and sons Robert and Steven, all of Albuquerque. The family has asked that donations in her memory be sent to the St. Pius X Scholarship Fund, 5301 St. Joseph's Drive NW, Albuquerque, N.M. 87120. Mass will be celebrated today at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Church, 4080 St. Joseph Place.
