Frank Burckhard, 85, East Grand Forks, MN passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, July 30, 2011 in Valley Eldercare Center, Grand Forks, ND.

Frank was born on July 20, 1926 the son of Frank and Christine (Keller) Burckhard in Devils Lake, ND. He graduated from high school there and entered the United States Navy on July 21, 1944. He served on the Destroyer USS Bristol as a Radar Operator. After his honorable discharge from the Navy on June 9, 1946, he moved to East Grand Forks to live. He graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in Business Administration.

On September 28, 1949 he met Dot E. Barrett and on September 28, 1950, they were married in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks. He worked in the petroleum business for 39 plus years retiring from the Ashland Oil Co. in 1988. He was one of the original 8 directors that built the Valley Country Club of East Grand Forks; serving 10 years on the board; 8 years as a director and 2 years as president. He also held the position as honorary director of the Ethanol Refinery of Wichita, KS.

Frank and Dot spent the winter months in Mesa, AZ. He enjoyed bowling and had a passion for golf. Frank treasured the time he got to spend on the course with his family and friends. He would recap his round hole by hole, shot by shot to anyone who would listen. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, The Catholic Order of Foresters, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks and Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Dot; children, Daniel, East Grand Forks, MN Debbie (Loran) Fearing, Grand Forks, ND, Doni-Erin (Laramie) Olson, Grand Forks, ND; Darin (Amy), Rosemount, MN; grandchildren, Kera Fearing, Kailey and Keegan Burckhard; great-grandson, Chayse Hoeger; step-grandchildren; Angie and Brian (Ellie) Olson; sisters, Theresa MacWilliams, Bismarck, ND, Betty (Leo) Johnson, Annandale, MN, Jeanette Ziegler, Arlington, TX and Bonnie (Ron) Woodward, Seattle, WA; a brother, James (Janis), Alto, NM.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Eva Thompson and Anna Mertens.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 4, 2011 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks, MN.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 7:00 p.m. vigil service in Gregory J. Norman – Norman Funeral Home, 2950 S. Washington St., Grand Forks, ND. Visitation will continue for one hour before Mass on Thursday at the church.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.

Military Honors: Members of the American Legion Post 157, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota National Guard.
