Sarah Elizabeth and Lulu McDaniel were the third and fourth of eight children born to Cecelia and Benjamin McDaniel. Her twin sister, Lulu, died in infancy. Sarah was born and reared on a farm north of Argentine, Kansas. She married Aloysius Burgard and they were the parents of nine children: Cecelia Marie, Eva Emily, Carl Henry, Henrietta, Aloysius Anthony Jr., Otto Benjamin, Helen Josephine and Harold Leo.

Sarah was a parishioner of St. Peter's Catholic Church. She was 74 years old when she passed away at her home at 237 North 17th Street in Kansas City, Kansas. Sarah was survived by all her nine children, 16 grandchildren, and her sisters, Josephine Connelly and Emily Hains.
