VETERAN
Found Dead in His Chair at Daugher's Home
CAME FROM DANVILLE
George K. Smith, who came to Elwood seven weeks ago for a visit with his daughter, Mrs. Allen Mason, at 2033 North C street, was found dead in his chair, at 4 o'clock Sunday morning.
He was a gallant veteran of the Civil war and by his choice had been making his residence at the soldiers' home at Danville, Illinois, occasionally visiting his daughter in this city.
He was ill when he came to Elwood recently, suffering with a dropsical affection and found greatest repose at night in sleeping in a comfortable chair. His relatives gave him the best attention and Saturday evening, he was in apparently his usual health.
Early Sunday morning, Mr. Mason awakened and went to look after Mr. Smith. Apparently he was sleeping, but a closer examination proved that death had come to him during the slumber, so peacefully that no one knew just the hour the great commander called him.
George K. Smith was 67 years of age. He served all through the war and was a good soldier. Many Elwood veterans were acquainted with him having formed his friendship on previous visits to the city.
The funeral services took place at the home this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Dobson of the Presbyterian church, conducting the srvices, and the interment followed in the city cemetery.
The veterans of the G.A.R. post were in attendance and acted as an escort, and the body was laid to rest with military honors. There will be another grave to cover with flowers in the Elwood cemetery, nedt Decoration day, that of a good soldier and a good man, and the relatives of Comrade Smith have the sympathy of all of the people of the city. (Elwood Call Leader, April 8, 1907.)
