World War I Harland was called to service, part of that service was spent in France. After his return, he married Grace Johann Raun daughter of Gunhild(Julia)Sanden and John H. Raun, took place at Mason City , Iowa on Feb. 20, 1920. Grace was born Feb. 8, 1897 at Mason City and grew up in Fertile area. Harland starded in the banking bussiness in Fertile and was there for five years. This followed by several years at Eagle Grove, Iowa, Dundee, Minn., and Kensett, Iowa. In 1928 he became a cashier in the Forest City National Bank, later called Forest City Bank and Trust Co. He left there in 1949 for first National Bank in Edmmons Minnesota. In 1954 he became director of pensions for the former Evangelical Lutheran Church body in Minneapolis, Minn. and its successor, the American Lutheran Church now the ELCA.
Harlan also served on Waldorf Collage Board of Regents. On June 11, 1970 Harley died in Walnut Creek, Californa. His funeral was held at Fertile Lutheran Church.
