Childhood
John was born near Stone Arabia in New York state on May 12, 1819. He was Baptized on June 20, 1819. According to the Baptism record, his parents were Adam Feix and Sally Johns.

Kane County, Illinois (1846-1855)
We are not exactly sure when John moved to Illinois. I know John was living in Illinois by 1846 because I have court documents saying he borrowed money from a man named John K. Young on the 3rd of June in 1846. These documents also mention a Nelson Fikes which I believe is John's younger brother. Elizabeth arrived in the United States and married John in 1847. I think this event took place in Kane County.

The 1855 Illinois State Census shows John A. Fikes living in Sugar Grove, Kane, Illinois with his wife, four children, and his mother. The four children would have been Charles, Oscar, Leonard, and Mary Fikes.

Highland, Grundy County, Illinois
By June of 1860, the family is living in Grundy County and they have another son named Albert.

The 1870 census was enumerated in July of 1870. The family is still living in Highland, Grundy County. John A., Charles, Oscar, and Leonard are farmers. Mary and Albert are still in school along with the newest member of the family, a son named Francis. John's mother, Sally, and John's brother, Henry, are living with the family.

According to the 1880 census (enumerated in June), a couple of the children have moved out. Oscar, Albert, and Francis are the only children remaining at home. John's mother and brother still live with them. Mary and Charles have married and moved out.

Crawford County, Kansas
By 1885 John and his family are living in Crawford County, Kansas. Oscar and Frank (Francis) are the only children living at home at this point. Sally and Henry are also living with John. This is the last census record Sally appears in. By 1895 she is no longer with the family.

In the 1895 census, the household consists of John, Elizabeth, and their son Oscar. In 1900 it is the same but they have a servant named Arminda Long living with them.

Elizabeth died June 30, 1900 and John died just a few years later on September 27, 1905.
