Herman "Hawk" Hawkins, Jr got his first real break in an organized band with Lefty Ray Sexton and his Tennessee Serenaders back in 1955. He went on to play with many notable bands including Jerry Lee Lewis' band. Hawkins can be found in the credit/liner notes on several of Lewis' albums.

When he played with Lefty Ray he was called by the band and friends, Junior Hawkins.
