!OBITUARY: Last Rites Held For Gradus Aalbers

Funeral services for Gradus Aalbers, Sr. were held April 1 in St. Lawrence Community Church. The Rev. Walter Larrabee officiated. Aalbers died Tuesday, March 28 in DeSmet at the age of 74 having been in ill health for the past two years.

He was born March 2, 1881 in Holland and came to America at the age of 20 settling in Iowa. His parents came later and also settled in Iowa.

He was married in 1904 to Cornelia Van Den Berg and they were the parents of eight children, two of which died in infancy and one at the age of 15. He and his family lived in South Dakota most of their lives except for short periods spent in Iowa. In 1947 he lost all his worldy (sic) possessions in the flood there. He was a resident of St. Lawrence at the time of his death.

He attended church services regularly until failing health prevented him from attending.

Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Skinner, St. Lawrence; Marjorie, Emmetsburg, Iowa; three sons, Gradus, Jr. and William, St. Lawrence and Garrett, DeSmet; 23 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was the last surviving member of his family.
