Watmough was elected to Congress in 1830 as an Anti-Jacksonian and served two terms. He lost his reelection bid in 1834, running as a Whig. Thereafter, he served briefly as High Sheriff of Philadelphia and later as surveyor of the port of Philadelphia from 1841 to 1845.
