Son of Solomon Steenrod and Danielle Ward both born New York, " descending from an early migration of Scandinavian family, variant of Staeinraudarson to Steenrodsen in 15th century."

Brother to Edward, Ebenzer, Solomon, Elizabeth Steenrod Fuller, Amy Steenrod Wilson, and Mary Steenrod Ward.

Cornelius first married Mary Elizabeth Caldwell, about 1756, New York. They had children
Cornelius Jr, Phebe, Edward, Susannah and Lewis.

Cornelius served as a Captain in the 1st New York Continental Line, American Revolutionary War., from 1775 to 1782, in the County Militia and as a Minute Man.

His brother Ebenezer also served in Revolutionary War and enlisted in same company as his brother Cornelius.

His second wife was Amy Elizabeth Briggs, who when widowed, remarried to James Brown Sr, a widower, March 23, 1799, Ohio County, Virginia before West Virginia Statehood.

Daughter Phoebe Steenrod born 1765, North Salem, Westchester County, New York, married Benjamin Griffin in 1785.

Daughter Susannah Steenrod born 1768, married David Comstock in 1798, Wheeling, Ohio County, Virginia. She died April 29, 1816, Muskingum County, Ohio.

Some information obtained from "A Genealogical Study of the Steenrod Family", Pub 1960, Belvidere, Illinois, researched, compiled and written by Robert Lewis Steenrod, 3rd great-grandson of Cornelius Steenrod.
A subsequent book of same name was published in 2011.

This book purports that Cornelius fathered 7 children.
