Garland, Utah - Vernald William Johns passed away Wednesday, March 3, 1999, in Logan, Utah, at Sunshine Terrace after a long and fruitful life. Vernald was born Feb. 8, 1902, in Pleasant View, Utah, the son of Thomas S. and Amy Barker Johns. He married Estella Franke Beal July 15, 1931, in the Logan LDS Temple. She died Dec. 7, 1985. He married the former Mrs. Daniel C. (Aldine) Nelsen June 10, 1986 in the Logan Temple. She died Sep. 26, 1998.Vernald attended school in Salem, Idaho, and Ogden including Weber Academy. He graduated from Utah State Agricultural College. He was editor of the Weber Academy yearbook and associate editor of the Utah State College yearbook.He and Franke lived in Garland where Vernald was editor and publisher of the Garland Times and later postmaster for the US Postal Service for fifteen years.He was a member of the Garland Lions Club and was an active member of the Garland 2nd Ward serving as teacher, music leader, and ward clerk. He also served in the Bear River Stake as clerk and member of stake presidency.After retirement, he and his wife Franke served an LDS mission to Columbia, South America. He was author of two hymns published in the 1985 LDS Hymn Book.Vernald was a faithful and loving husband to both Franke and Aldine. He was kind and generous to family and friends.He is survived by seven step-children, Marilyn (Walt) Pase, Las Cruses, N.M., Richard (Mary-Lynn) Nelsen, Richmond, Brent (Karen) Nelsen, Derby, Kan., Kenneth (Susan) Nelsen, Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash., Joy (Wally) Fritsch, Salt Lake City, Lucy (Jerry) Maughan, Nibley, Michelle (Berre) Larsen, Logan; 33 step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and foster daughters, Ninfa L. De Guiterrez, Mexico, Conchita L. De Escalante, Mexico.Also surviving are one sister, Norma (Milton) Yorgason, Salt Lake City; one brother, Earl (Phyllis) Johns, Ogden; two sisters-in-law, Tasma Johns, Yuma, Ariz., and Mary Jane Johns, Ogden; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by wives Franke and Aldine; his parents; brothers, Lawrence and Parley; and sisters Hazel Sorenson and Grace.Funeral services will be held at noon Monday, March 8, 1999, at theGarland Tabernacle, 140 W. Factory, with Bishop Gary Huber officiating.Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 1999, at Rogers andTaylor Funeral Home, 111 N. 100 East Tremonton and Monday from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the Tabernacle.Interment in the Ben Lomand Cemetery in North Ogden.
