Holton Recorder, 4 March 1909
J. H. RILEY THROWN FROM HIS BUGGY
DIES FROM INJURIES RECEIVED SATURDAY AFTERNOON.
Saturday afternoon about three o'clock, as James H. Riley was driving to Holton from his home eight miles west of town, his horses became frightened at a load of junk as they neared the Taylor farm and ran away. One of the lines broke as they rounded the corner and Mr. Riley was thrown out. He was picked up unconscious and carried to the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. S. Stratton, where everything possible was done for him, but to no avail. He died from internal injuries at six o'clock in the evening.
Mr. Riley had lived in Jackson county for more than thirty years. If he had lived he would have been fifty-nine years old next December. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, six sons, Justin A., of Wallace county, Raymond M., Oney H., Cecil J., Mart H., and Fain G., one daughter, Mrs. Nettie V. Stratton, of this city, one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Siple, of Oakley, Kansas, and one brother, John W. Riley of Hiawatha. One brother died in 1878, and oddly enough, his death was caused by being thrown from a horse. A host of friends and neighbors also mourn his sudden death. Mr. Riley was a good man and respected by all who knew him. He was a regular attendant at the Banner M.E. church and the funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. Grant Hamm at the M. E. church here Monday afternoon. Interment was made in the Holton cemetery. Those from a distance who were here for the funeral were, Justin Riley and wife, of Sharon Springs, Chas. Siple and family of Oakley, J. W. Riley of Hiawatha, and his two daughters from near Horton, Will Porter, of Allen, Kansas, Mrs. Riley's brother and sister, from Horton, Mrs. Noland and Frank Porter, of Horton and Mrs. Mabel Adcock, of Lancaster.
